 | | | Special Editions are Everywhere, and It's Making Readers Skeptical | | |
| I was hanging out on Threads, as one does when they're actively avoiding editing their next book, when I saw a lively discussion about special editions. Now, as an author I love the idea of creating special editions of my books complete with sprayed edges and exclusive art and custom box set designs. I don't have any planned, but it sounds wonderful in theory. It was disheartening to see so many readers who love their shelf candy but are growing more skeptical of purchasing a beautiful cover for fear that it hides a poor quality book.
So what does this say about the future of special editions?
Sprayed edges. Foil covers. Character art. Ribbon bookmarks. Years ago, this wasn't normal. Now readers are buying two copies of the same book, sometimes three if they also own the digital version.
But if the conversation on Threads taught me anything, it's that readers aren't falling out of love with special editions. They're falling out of love with books that rely on beautiful packaging to make up for weak storytelling. At the end of the day, the sprayed edges might get a book onto a reader's shelf, but it's a compelling story that earns it a permanent place there.
Great books deserve beautiful editions, not the other way around. | | |
